Taking Flight - Caring into the Future

In the past 10 years, the home care cooperative movement has experienced significant growth. Beginning with only five home care cooperatives in 2014, we now have 21 today with six cooperatives incorporated in 2023. Across the country, there are numerous start-up efforts underway, showing the growing interest in this model. We will fuel this momentous at this year's conference by providing training and tools to strengthen the sector and shape its future. The National Home Care Cooperative Conference is one of the highlights of the year for those that believe worker-ownership offers better jobs for caregivers and better care for clients. Under the theme Taking Flight: Caring into the Future, we will gather for the 8th year in Dulles, Virginia. Join us as we explore, discover, and forge new ways to make care work for workers and families.

Risk and Reward - Embracing Risk in Your Cooperative

Rachael Tanner, Principal and Co-Founder, Ventures with Purpose

Risk is inherent in every business. The very decision to launch a new business is itself a risk. But without risk there is no reward, and often the greater the risk the greater the reward. So how do you embrace risk in your cooperative? How do you let go of the scarcity mindset in your cooperative and boldly (and smartly) lean into risk? How do you reframe and embrace the prospect of failure? Rachael Tanner, Principal and Co-Founder of Ventures with Purpose will share reflections on her personal journey embracing risk and provide tools to help cooperators embrace risk in their businesses.

Member Benefits and Member Engagement

Facilitator: Electra Skrzydlewski, Director of Shared Ownership, Metropolitan Consortium of Community Developers

How can we make the cooperative difference in home care real to our new staff and members? What are other co-ops doing to provide benefits to their caregivers, on limited budgets? How can we get more or new members to run for the board? How can we engage our member-caregivers beyond the basic requirements?

In this two part facilitated brainstorming session we will collectively work to answer these common questions. Cooperators will share how they approach member benefits and member engagement at their cooperatives and brainstorm new creative opportunities to enhance benefits and engagement–which are intertwined. We will consider tangible benefits like insurances, emergency loan programs, and bonuses, but also less tangible and equally important benefits like communication, transparency and recognition.
