What is the International Year of the Co-op?

2012 has been recognized as the International Year of Co-operatives by the United Nations. This is an acknowledgement by the international community that co-operatives drive the economy, respond to social change, are resilient to the global economic crisis and are serious, successful businesses creating jobs in all sectors.

Cooperatives: Motors of Development

Oikocredit Germany is organizing a three-day conference called “Cooperatives: motors of development”. The event is organized in cooperation with the Protestant Academy Bad Boll, the United Nations Association of Germany and Fairtrade Germany and sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development.

Cooperatives for Sustainable Economic and Social Change
February 9th to February 10th, 2012
Bhopal, India

The Conference is being held on the background of economic meltdown of 2008-09, the impact of which is still undiminished and has affected all countries, both Developed and Emerging. One of the most notable feature that has emerged during the period has been that the Co-operatives not only were not affected by economic slow down but they remained vibrant and continued to deliver a variety of services and products at competitive rates and at the same time prospered and emerged financially strong.

Promoting the Understanding of Cooperatives for a Better World
March 15th to March 16th, 2012
San Servolo, Italy

Euricse in collaboration with ICA intends to commemorate the UN International Year of Cooperatives by creating a discussion
forum that can promote a better understanding of the rationale, roles, potential, and impact of cooperatives. To this end, selected contributors are asked to write in-depth analyses on relevant issues and Euricse researchers will subsequently deliver a summarizing document based on these analyses.
