Focus on Seniors again in 2010

In May 2005, the trustees of the MSC Fund approved a major change in the focus of the Fund's grant making. Starting in 2006, and for the foreseeable future, the Fund will focus exclusively on cooperative development that enhances the quality of life for seniors living in rural America. For the definition of and information about cooperatives, see www.ncba.coop/abcoop.cfm The MSC Fund trustees' decision was based on their assessment that the needs of the elderly will be one of the greatest challenges facing rural communities over the next several decades and their belief that cooperatives are well-suited to meet those needs. Another major factor in the decision was the trustees' desire to honor the MSI legacy and “give something back” to the country 's rural communities, the kinds of places where many of the original MSI policy holders live. As a result, the MSC Fund will focus its attention on co-op development grants that will: • Contribute to the development of systemic approaches to replicate successful cooperative models that already serve seniors in rural areas. • Provide technical assistance to aid in the development of co-op ventures that will serve seniors living in rural areas. • Provide a better understanding of lessons learned from co-ops that have served or are currently serving seniors living in rural areas.
